Amy's Aquatics: A Heartfelt Journey of Faith, Passion, and Water

Life often takes us on unexpected twists and turns, and for Amy, a surprising turn of events sparked a beautiful new chapter in her life. A journey that combines faith, community, and a love for swimming. Born out of a layoff, Amy’s Aquatics has grown into more than just a swim lesson business; it’s a reflection of her dedication, kindness, and a touch of divine guidance.

It all started when Amy was working at a title office, where they wanted her to take on a new role that would mean staying late into the evenings; something she knew wouldn't work with her busy family life. When they let her go, she saw a new beginning rather than an ending. With a heart full of faith and determination, she decided to teach swim lessons right in her backyard. That first summer, she shared her plan on Facebook, and ended up teaching over 50 kids. The next year, she tripled that number. Today, Amy’s Aquatics isn’t just about swimming. It's  about building a community, treating each child as family, and sharing gifts that she believes are vital; life skills and confidence.

Looking back, Amy recognizes how God was guiding her every step, even planning her trip to Green Turtle Cay. A chance conversation with new friends during a holiday trip turned into an incredible opportunity to teach on this beautiful island. She feels God's hand in how she was guided from Nassau to Green Turtle Cay, where she met Sue Ellen and John; kindred spirits who would become part of her journey. This divine coincidence, meeting the right friends at the right time, became a pivotal moment. This led to a summer of teaching, learning, and deepening connections.

Amy’s childhood was filled with her mother’s love for swimming; her mom states that she taught her and her sister how to swim before they learned to walk. That early passion evolved into a lifelong commitment, joining the YMCA swim team as a child, earning her Water Safety Instructor certification, and eventually offering lessons to children of friends and family. Now, Amy teaches her own grandchild, continuing a tradition of passing on the gift of water safety and confidence through generations.

What Amy finds most rewarding isn’t just the technical skills; it's the joy of witnessing children conquer their fears. She remembers Malachi from GT swim camp, who started hesitant but eventually swam all the way across the pool by the end of camp, beaming with pride. She recalls many children who arrive frightened of the water but leave empowered and eager to splash and play. For Amy, seeing a child go from “I can’t” to “I did it” is the absolute highlight of her work.

One of Amy’s favorite stories involves Matthew, a young boy who fell in the pool but remembered what he was taught, “if you fall, grab the wall”, and saved himself. Inspired, Amy even wrote a book about Matthew’s story, available on Kindle Unlimited (Matthew's Lesson Learned), emphasizing the importance of water safety and quick thinking. Over the years, countless families have shared stories of loved ones saving themselves thanks to lessons learned in her program.

Teaching on Green Turtle Cay was more than just a summer job, it was a dream realized. Watching children learn, grow, and overcome fears, these moments stand out in her mind.

  • Nori’s Reminder: Throughout the week, little Nori kept reminding Amy that her name was Nori and that Mae-Mae was her sister; brightening every day with her bubbly personality.

  • Joshua’s Confidence: Excitedly showing off that he could swim across the pool without help; an achievement that made his family and Amy so proud.

  • Anaya’s Happiness: Coming in every day with a big smile, ready to say hi and jump into the water, spreading contagious joy.

  • De’Marion’s Smile: His adorable snaggle-tooth grin as he performed new skills, filling Amy with pride.

  • Koby’s Claps: Clapping happily after mastering a new swimming skill, showing her that encouragement is powerful.

  • Khloe and Mia’s Beauty in Motion: Swimming with beautiful form, demonstrating how much they had learned in such a short time.

  • Sweet Goodbyes: Hugs from Zellie, Amber, and others at the end of every day, making her feel like part of their family.

She describes these moments as some of the most memorable of her life, and she looks forward to returning next summer to make even more memories with new friends.

Amy’s journey is a testament to faith, perseverance, and the power of community. She gives heartfelt thanks to everyone who made this summer possible. Sue Ellen and John for their hospitality and friendship, Taylor for coordinating logistics, and Chloe and Alyssa for helping in the pool. Her mission is clear: To teach, inspire, and ensure everyone knows that “You can do it!”; at any age, in any place, with a little faith and effort.
